How are (animal-hair) makeup brushes made?

I am curious as to whether they just shave the animal and leave it unharmed or if there is abuse involved in the process. Any recommendations to websites that could answer this question better would also be helpful, thanks in advance. How are (animal-hair) makeup brushes made?
It depends on the manufacturer and type of hair.

Badger and squirrel brushes are deemed cruelty products as the animal can not live a 'normal' life without it's hair.

Horse, goat and ox are some fibers that can be considered cruelty free, depending on the method of removal.
