Two thirds of Americans don't care about the gender or race makeup of the Supreme Court. So why...?

...is Obama obsessed with it?

Shouldn't the best jurist be selected regardless of race and gender? After all, justice is supposed to be blind. Two thirds of Americans don't care about the gender or race makeup of the Supreme Court. So why...?
I'm a liberal, but this is one issue where I agree with the conservatives; discrimination is not the answer to discrimination. Affirmative action only causes more hate.

Instead of trying to create equality via AA, we should focus on problems that are generally associated with minority neighborhoods such as poor quality of life and crime. Then, there will be more qualified minority employees. I guess I can sort of see why people would want forced equality in courts though; because they represent people and interpret the Constitution, etc. But I'm still not convinced it's right. Two thirds of Americans don't care about the gender or race makeup of the Supreme Court. So why...?
I agree with you, it should be based on qualifications, regardless of gender or race. President Obama should be focused on giving us the most qualified supreme court he can, not the most diverse.

That doesn't mean it would be all white men.. unless you are suggesting they are the most qualified, therefore you have to let less qualified people on in order to make it diverse?

It shouldn't be a worry, there are plenty of people of different races and female that are qualified. But diversity should not be the priority.
Two thirds of Americans are the reason Obama is president. Race and gender have nothing to do with it. Obama wants a liberal on the court. If you have followed him, you would know that since 2000, he has spoken about the court not being liberal enough, and not being empathetic enough. The one and only job of the Supreme Court is to apply the rule of law as set forth in the Constitution. They are not supposed to legislate from the bench, meaning, that they are not to write laws. That is a power left to congress, so that we have a separation powers as per the Constitution. This distribution of power must be maintained, or we will become a totalitarian nation.
hahahahahahahahha! sure it is.dude you do not get it.these guys are in for life and cause super damage to the USA.their function is to interpret the constitution, not legislate from the bench.therefore the selection is always scary since the powers in charge can put in a guy that will hurt the USA.
Obsessed? The best court is one that represents the citizens of the US. While the country is very diverse, the court has been made up almost exclusively of old white men. Would you be making this argument if all the justices were Latino, or women?
Political correctness has always deemed it necessary for the court to ';represent'; America. But you cannot since we have so many different groups. We'd need a court of 100 judges to reflect society. But people would rather ';feel'; better.
Democrats are all about equality of race and gender but not of intelligence. They wouldn't care if we were back in the stone ages as long as everyone was represented by their respective idiot.
Because liberals see the cure to racism in Affirmative Action.

Which is discrimination against the majority in favor of the minority.
How can you tell he's obsessed with it?

And if justice is blind, then it shouldn't matter to anyone whether his short list is representative of the U.S. population or not.
Obama is 'obsessed'?? Didn't hear that or see that in his statements or actions.
Your question supposed that there is ONE best qualified person to the Court. There are many. Why should old white men be the sole choices among the qualified?
Yes the best person for the job should be picked for the job color should have no bearing in the choice.
How come 79% of Americans won't admit that they are republican?
I see nothing wrong with him wanting diversity. I think it's a great idea.
